Neil Johnston's Paintings

Exhibit open from June 1st through July 1st.

Johnston’s work has often used images gathered from multiple viewpoints and places. In this new work, Johnston is especially interested in the maps and diagrams that we use to help us remember, compare and imagine the places in which we live or travel to. Johnston has paired and combined these charts with less place-specific patterns of leaf canopies and automatic drawing to create new spaces. Using this combination of scientific image and evocative, visceral painting, Johnston’s paintings suggest the illusion or fantasy that separates our memories of place from the reality and often unfamiliarity of being in the present with them.

Neil Johnston holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the College of Visual Arts in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and a Master of Fine Arts Visual Studies in painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is currently an adjunct professor at the College of Visual Arts in Saint Paul.

Neil has been commissioned by private collectors and corporations for many paintings and local murals. His work is collected by local corporations such as Medtronic Inc. and Hines International.

His recent work will show at FIVETWOSIX Gallery in Saint Paul from June 1st thru July 1st. The opening reception is June 1st from 6-9pm.
